MEDITATIONS FROM ISAIAH

December 21, 2005

Reading: Isaiah 9:3-7

“And his name will be called Wonderful.”—Isa 9:6

My soul, as you contemplate your Savior this morning, do you observe anything about Him that is not wonderful? His very name is Wonderful and so is everything about Him, His person and works, His past, present and future.

Consider for a moment the wonders of His Person: His Godhead, His manhood, and the wonders of both natures combined in one Person. What do you know about Him as revealed in the scriptures—His works, the wonders of His offices, character and attributes? Can anything but wonderful be ascribed to them all? Consider His miraculous birth, His wonderful death, resurrection and ascension—who can compare? Let us name names—Allah, Baal, Buddha, Dharma-kaya, Krishna, or any other claimed by some as their god—can any compare equally to Jesus? Truly, to those who believe He is Wonderful now, and to unbelievers, He will be acknowledged as wonderful when they meet Him in their judgment.

Who other than Jesus sits at the right hand of power and is the recipient of an everlasting kingdom, and is the subject of everlasting praise and worship by both angels and His chosen?

Does any other offer the wonders of sins forgiven and everlasting Life—who else loves like Him by taking our guilt upon Himself and suffering the wrath of a righteous God in your place? His love passes knowledge and the peace He gives is beyond all understanding.

No, my soul, do not waste your time seeking a comparison to your Savior for there is none. He, whose name is Wonderful, stands alone.

Dear Lord, thank You for revealing Yourself to me with such clarity. While I bask in Your beauty and revel in Your amazing wonder, I am conscious that there is more, so much more—for what You permit me to see now is but a shadow in a glazed mirror. Your mercy keeps me from seeing You as You really are for I am not prepared to see You in the fullness of Your glory. Continue Your revelations to me—as much as my soul can bear.

Oh, Wonder of Wonders, Your Name says it all,

Creator, Redeemer, Intercessor and Priest;

Prepare my soul to heed Your marvelous call,

Oh, Wonder of Wonders, from the most to the least.

By Your wonderful death You have saved me,

By Your resurrection and life You keep me,

By Your intercession You preserve me,

Oh, Wonder of Wonders, by faith, You I can see.
