Reading:  Deuteronomy 4:1-9

"For whatever reason we may call upon Him” Deuteronomy 4:7

"For what great nation is there that has God so near to it, as the LORD our God is to us, for whatever reason we may call upon Him.’

Saints of the Living God, engrave these words on your heart and bind them securely in your mind. They are priceless, they are reliable and they are a guarantee that your Heavenly Father’s ear is always open to your cry.

Compare this statement to that of Genesis 3:24

“So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.”

What a privilege! What an honor! What a joy! What a comfort! What an encouragement! There are no words that can truly describe the graciousness of Almighty God as stated by Moses to this nation of sinners and complainers (Deut: 1:27). Israel was a “great nation” because they had Jehovah as their God, not necessarily because they loved Him and obeyed Him, for they did not. They now stood on the shores of the river Jordan after 40 years of wandering in the desert—forty years when, had they been obedient to the Words of God, the journey could have been traversed in eleven days—Deut 1:2.

How much like us in our walk with the Lord and spiritual growth. How many twists and turns we make because we take a wrong path and find that we have to travel over the same ground time after time. We are slow travelers because we are slow learners. Like God’s people so many years ago we are kept back because of our unbelief and slowness to take God at His Word. Look back and record how many times you have heard a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it" (Isaiah 30:21), but you decided to traverse paths of your own choosing. How ashamed we should be when we realize how reluctant we are to learn the lessons the Holy Spirit seeks to teach us. The writer to the Hebrews brought this to their attention when he wrote,

“For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God” Heb: 5:12.

While we might rightfully be ashamed at our slowness of growth we can still take encouragement from the words of our text. To know that God is always near to him who calls on Him—no matter the reason. Are you discouraged because of your disobedience and slowness of spiritual growth? Are you still in need of milk when you should be feasting on the meat of God’s Word? Based on the Word of God, I can guarantee God’s ear is open to your cry of repentance and you will find pardon and forgiveness from Him who sees and knows all. The promise is true now as it was when it was penned,

“Seek the LORD while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the LORD, and He will have mercy on him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon” Isaiah 55:6-7.

There is no reason to feel disassociated from your Savior because of your past and present disobedience. Take advantage of His wonderful promise,

“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you … Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up” James 4:8,10.

Whatever the reason, child of God, draw near to your Heavenly Father, and you will find Him near. His ear is always open to the cry of a repentant heart.

"What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing"
