Reading:
Proverbs 2:1-9
“Then you will find
... the knowledge of God” (5)
What would you do, how much would
you pay, what would you be willing to give up if you could understand the fear
of the Lord and find the knowledge of God? Man’s search for God has been an
ongoing process since time began and has resulted in the myriads of religions
that exist in the world today. The difference between the gospel of Jesus
Christ and every other religion is that God seeks man, He finds a way to communicate
with man and not the other way around. The words of Azariah resound throughout
the universe, “If you seek him, he will be found by you,” 2 Chron:15:2. “They sought the Lord eagerly, and he was
found by them” (15).
When we seek the Lord “eagerly” and
in the proper manner, He will be found by us. He places Himself in the path of
our search because it His desire to be found. Our reading in Proverbs directs
us to the proper path of discovery, “if you accept my words and store up my
commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to
understanding, and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding,
and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure,
THEN YOU WILL UNDERSTAND THE FEAR OF THE LORD AND FIND THE KNOWLEDGE OF GOD.”
This is the path of discovery.
But, you may argue, many others of
other religions are just as sincere and dedicated in their search as is
depicted above! Ah, but Jesus clarified this path of discovery when He said, “I
am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except
through me,” John 14:6. Whether you are an unbeliever searching for salvation
or a Believer seeking God’s face, there is only one way – through His Son,
Jesus Christ. There is no access to the Father except through Jesus.
Half hearted seekers will not find
God, “If you look for it (wisdom and understanding) as for silver and search
for it as hidden treasure, then ... “.
Jesus put it this way, “Blessed are
those who hunger and thirst after righteousness, for they will be filled”
Matt:5:6.
“The lions may grow weak and
hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing” Psalm 49:10.
How much do you want to “find the
knowledge of God”? It is no secret. God has made it abundantly clear how to
accomplish this, but it remains a wonder why more people choose to find God
another way! Every other path we tread leads to a dead end–literally! One of
the saddest commentaries I have ever heard came from the lips of one of the
ancient philosophers, “I have spent my entire life searching for God and, now
that I am about to meet Him, I am no closer than when I began.” I cannot
remember who uttered these words but I have never forgotten them.
There is only one way and that is
diligently through Jesus Christ. God will not suddenly reveal Himself to you as
you are lounging in your deck chair with you mind on anything but Him. The
promise of the scriptures is that if you seek Him you will find Him.
“And without faith it is impossible
to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and
that he rewards those who earnestly seek him” Hebrews 11:6.
How gracious the Lord is to permit
Himself to be found by mere man, but the path is narrow and there is only one
Way, His name is Jesus.
