Reading: Revelation
4:1-11
"And there was a rainbow around the
throne” Revelation 4:3.
The Throne of God is a brilliant, magnificent place, a mixture of
brilliant colors and sounds of continual worship to Him who sits on it. Surrounding
His throne are twenty-four other thrones representing the saints of God from
creation to the end of time. He who sat on the throne is described in our
reading as “like a jasper and a sardius stone” with a rainbow around the throne.
How can one describe that which is beyond description? But from the pictures
the Holy Spirit paints for us throughout His Word, we are left with a sense of
indescribable awe and wonder. Ezekiel expresses this wonder in similar words,
“Like the appearance of a rainbow in a cloud on a rainy day, so was the
appearance of the brightness all around it. This was the appearance of the
likeness of the glory of the LORD” Ezekiel 1:28.
The first reference to a rainbow is found as a sign of God’s covenant
with Noah – Genesis 9:12-17. The rainbow that surrounds the Throne of God is an
everlasting reminder of God’s covenant between Himself and His redeemed people.
There are seven colors in a rainbow, the seven basic colors from which
all other colors are derived. The various blending of these basic colors
produce all the different colors with which we are familiar. The colors of the
rainbow are Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue,
Purple, and Indigo. The upper colors of Red, Orange and Yellow speak
of different degrees of heat and represent judgment. The lower colors of Blue,
Purple, and Indigo are heavenly colors and speak of salvation accomplished. The
central color Green is a blending of the Yellow and Blue.
“Mercy and truth have met together;
righteousness and peace have kissed.
Truth shall spring out of the earth, and righteousness shall look down
from heaven.” Psalm 85:10.
When you see a rainbow in the sky remember that
God’s fiery judgment on sin has been satisfied by the One who came from heaven. Green is the
wonderful color that reminds us that God’s judgment and mercy have met in the
Person of Jesus Christ. Green has always been my favorite color – I do not know
why. Now I am pleased it is because of that which it represents in the rainbow
of God’s covenant. Grass and green vegetation covers a vast expanse of this
world’s surface. It lies between the blue sky and the brown soil of the earth.
Heaven and earth became one in Jesus Christ. Jesus, the
God-Man, Divine yet Human.
The colors of the bible are very meaningful and maintain their truths
throughout the scriptures. Red is the most dominant. Red speaks of the blood of
Jesus all the way from the Levitical sacrifices to the robe dipped in blood
that Christ Jesus is seen wearing in the Book of Revelation 19:11-16. It is the
robe worn by the KING OF KINGS and LORD OF LORDS.
O God of my heart,
nothing in Your creation was made without thought or
purpose. You decided the sky would be blue, the grass green, the sparrow brown,
and the rainbow a collage of color. Grant me insight into the
marvels of Your creation, but more so into the wonders and beauty of its
Creator.
