MEDITATIONS FROM THE PSALMS

Reading: Psalm 29:1-11

“The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is full of majesty” Psalm 29:4

Consider well, my soul, the reality of this statement regarding the voice of your Lord. You have been given so many great and magnificent examples in His Word:

“And God said, Let there be… and it was so”. That is the power of God’s voice! Genesis 1:2 says that the “The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep.” The ancient world considered these three things as a description of complete nothingness: formlessness, emptiness and darkness. Out of nothing God created the universe by the power of His voice.

Take heed to the voice of God for it “thunders”, “is powerful”, “is full of majesty”, “breaks the cedars”, “divides the flames of fire”, “shakes the wilderness”, “makes the deer give birth” and “strips the forests bare.” No wonder the Children of Israel “trembled” when God spoke out of the mountain. Even Satan and his angels tremble and shake.

“Give unto the LORD the glory due to His name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness” (2). You are invited to “come boldly to the throne of grace”, but do you treat this as an invitation to approach God flippantly? I have heard preachers refer to God as their “Buddy”! Where is the awe? Where is the reverence? Is there not one iota of trembling before the LORD? Not the trembling of fear but that of regarding His majesty and power, His grandeur and sovereignty.

It is the voice of Jesus that said, “Let there be”. It is the voice of Jesus that is described in Psalm 29. It was the voice of Jesus that raised Lazarus from the dead, and it was the voice of Jesus that also bid little children to come and sit by His side. It was the voice of Jesus that said, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” I ask you, can you trust the words of God? Absolutely and without any shadow of doubt!

Do not consider the promises of Jesus any less powerful and full of majesty as when He said “Let there be light!” “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” Ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you.” These words of Jesus, and every other word He spoke, are endued with the Sovereignty, authority, power and majesty of the Almighty. Never has He wasted a word or made a promise He cannot keep.

Do not be deceived into believing that your God is a ‘pathetic God’ waiting on the acceptance of His creation before He can fulfill His plan and purpose.

Bow in awe and wonder before your Creator, soul of mine, worship Him in the beauty of holiness. He invites you to rest in His arms and to eat at His table, but never to disregard His Sovereignty. Like John in the upper room, you are not pushed away when you lay your head upon His bosom, but always listen to the heartbeat of Him who is the Creator and Ruler of the universe.

The dead tremble, those under the waters and those inhabiting them.

Sheol is naked before Him, and Destruction has no covering.

He stretches out the north over empty space; He hangs the earth on nothing.

He binds up the water in His thick clouds, yet the clouds are not broken under it.

He covers the face of His throne, and spreads His cloud over it.

He drew a circular horizon on the face of the waters, At the boundary of light and darkness.

The pillars of heaven tremble, and are astonished at His rebuke.

He stirs up the sea with His power, and by His understanding He breaks up the storm.

By His Spirit He adorned the heavens; His hand pierced the fleeing serpent.

Indeed these are the mere edges of His ways, and how small a whisper we hear of Him!

But the thunder of His power who can understand?"

"What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing"
