MEDITATIONS
FROM THESSALONIANS

1 Thessalonians 1:1-10
“For from you the
word of the Lord has sounded forth” 1 Thessalonians 1:8
What a testimony these Macedonian believers had, not only
in their own area but also “in every place.” It was not an easy thing to name
the name of Jesus in Thessalonica but they did so “in much affliction.” Paul
himself had met with great opposition when he preached the gospel in this
metropolis and was sneaked out of town by those who had become believers during
his visit. The believers he left behind grew rapidly in their new found faith
proclaiming the “word of the Lord” with great gusto. They did not shrink into
oblivion because of their affliction but “sounded forth” the gospel. The word
‘sounded’ is that which was used to describe the sound of a trumpet blast. They
did not meet secretly, whispering behind closed doors, but spat, as it were, in
the face of adversity.
Their salvation was not only accompanied by affliction but
with “joy of the Holy Spirit.” This is what gave them this great boldness. They
experienced something outside of themselves. Not much time had passed since
they bowed in fear and ignorance before wood and stone idols, but now they knew
something far different, a joy their old religion could not give them.
My soul, is this your experience in Christ Jesus? How
prominent is your declaration of the gospel? From your home to the four corners
of the world—how bold is the message you ‘sound forth?” Often it is more
difficult to declare your faith at home than it is in far off places, for “Assuredly,
I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own country” Luke 4:24. The test comes when you are
under the microscope of your unbelieving family and neighbors. You speak of
your faith and your new life in Jesus Christ, yet your behavior belies all you
say.
“You are the light of the world. A
city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put
it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the
house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works
and glorify your Father in heaven” Matthew 5:14-16.
These new believers not only preached their faith but
practiced it also. They “became examples to all in Macedonia
and Achaia.” They were an encouragement to their fellow believers as well as a
living proof to the world that faith in Jesus Christ truly changes lives.
Thank You, Heavenly Father, for
saving me and for making me a new creature in Jesus Christ. Help me to be consistent
in my walk with You so that others may be a witness to
the change You have made in my life. In Your strength help me to sound forth
Your Word in both voice and deed.
