Reading: Psalm 13:1-6

“I will sing to the LORD” Psalm 13:6

Take note, soul of mine, of the range of emotion that David shares with us in this brief Psalm—from sorrow to song. You and David have one thing in common; you wear your heart on your sleeve, in other words you have difficulty hiding your emotions. Because of this it was not difficult for David to open his heart to God and share his feelings with Him. If he was sorrowful he poured his soul out to God, when he had doubts he felt free to ask questions of His Creator, and when he was glad he lifted his arms in praise. No matter what he was feeling or what his current situation was, he wrote about it. In the collection of Psalms we have everything from inexpressible praise to unbearable sorrow. But the one thing we see throughout his writings is his unmovable trust in God and his unwavering faith that God will prevail in the end.

Look carefully, my soul, and you will see how David’s emotion progresses from sorrow to praise: “Consider and hear me, O Lord my God; Enlighten my eyes, lest I sleep the sleep of death.” He turned to the Lord in supplication and communed with the Almighty. Herein lies the only path that will turn your sorrow into singing—communion with your Savior.

It is not always easy to turn to God and trust Him when it appears that you are surrounded by the enemy and he has blocked every avenue of escape, but this is one of the enemy’s lies. There is always a way of escape for God’s children – supplication and trust. It is guaranteed not to fail. Learn this lesson well—trust is the key that unlocks the gates of discouragement and doubt. Trust will turn your discouragement into rejoicing and your doubt into singing. When David turned his mind off his problems and onto the blessings he had received from God, he turned from questions of doubt to songs of praise.

Hallelujah, sing to Jesus,

Raise your hands and praise His name.

Lift your heart in adoration

Of the Son of God who came.

Lift your eyes to heaven above,

Beyond this world of sin and strife,

To the realm of joy and love,

Where God alone is Peace and Life.

Rest your eyes upon His beauty,

Observe His brilliance and light;

Gaze upon His majesty,

And His countenance so bright.

Approach Him boldly, bow your knees,

Lift your voice and hail Him King;

In His mercy our veiled eye sees,

By His grace our bridled tongue sings.

Hallelujah, sing to Jesus,

He’s our Savior, Lord and Friend;

Greet each morning full of praises,

With thankful heart your soul extend.
