MEDITATIONS FROM THE PSALMS

May 11, 2005

Reading: Psalm 68: 1-21

“You, O God, sent a plentiful rain, whereby You confirmed Your inheritance, when it was weary” Psalm 68:9.

Remember with grateful thanks and praise, my soul, for the refreshing, purifying and plentiful blessings from the hand of your God. His Word has promised that

“He shall come down like rain upon the grass before mowing, like showers that water the earth. In His days the righteous shall flourish, and abundance of peace, until the moon is no more” Ps 72:6-7.

When you are dry like a desert, does not the intervention of your Lord refresh you as He reminds you of His love and grace? Has He ever let you down when you hunger and thirst after Him?

Sometimes your He comes as misty dew, for He Himself said, “I will be like dew to Israel” Hosea 14:5. Have you not found your Lord, with great frequency, to come this way? How softly and quietly His dew gently rests upon you, even at times when you have not asked for it. His mercies are like that for they are new every morning (Lam 3:22-23) just like the refreshing dew on the ground. In His faithfulness He does not wait for you to be like a desert before He sends His refreshing dew.

At times, has He not sent plentiful rain in the form of showers to clean and purify your heart? When rain finally falls after a long drought, it washes destructive insects from the dying crop and purifies the air, so God purifies you as you are tainted with the world’s influences.

You, my soul, have enjoyed and benefited from God’s plentiful rain and know this speaks of none other than Jesus, your Savior and Provider. He Himself said,

“Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life."

Jesus is your refreshment and Purifier. He is the One who quenches your thirst and washes you daily from the world’s grime.

My Lord and my Friend, help me to always be aware of your refreshing and cleansing work in my life. Thank you for your faithfulness and love, and help me to rest in the assurance of your moment by moment care of my soul. I love you and praise you for your care and provision.

"What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing"
