MEDITATIONS FROM ISAIAH

March 1, 2006

Reading: Isaiah 33:20-24

“For the LORD is our Judge, The LORD is our Lawgiver, The LORD is our King; He will save us” Isa 33:22.

Consider, my soul, the many titles applied to your Savior by the Holy Spirit as He seeks to make Him known to us. Each title contains but a part of who He is and what He does relative to His relationship with you and all of His people. The verse before you is rich in this contemplation: Jesus is your Judge, Lawgiver and King. From this statement you can look both backward and forward in the Word as He is revealed to you in these capacities. The Book of Hebrews fills its pages with proof that Jesus is Prophet, Priest and King while another statement from the pen of Isaiah reveals Him as, “Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”

The prophet encourages you to examine your salvation in the light of Jesus as your Judge—a judge examines your case and applies the law to it. It is his duty to apply the law, whether it is morally right or wrong. A judge swears to apply the law of the land to each case, laying aside his personal view of the situation. God is your Judge and, along with Abraham, your conclusion is, “Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?”

No born again Christian can accuse God of being unjust in His interpretation of the law because He is not only your Judge but your Lawgiver. He who is both faithful and true wrote the law based on His holiness and righteousness and must therefore apply it accordingly. There is no injustice with God and neither can there ever be. Some accuse God of partiality and injustice for, they ask, how can God love Jacob and hate Esau? How can He save some and condemn others? How can a God of love permit such suffering? What they are actually saying is that they do not understand the law and decisions of the God who wrote the law of salvation. The solution to their own limited understanding of who God is and their own lack of faith is to “tweak” their doctrine so it aligns with their level of faith and understanding.

Every person must stand before God and will be judged by He who is not only the Judge of all but the Lawgiver Himself, and not based on how we understand it.

My soul, do not be guilty of changing the law of God so your weak faith can accept and understand it, but, rather, look to the Holy Spirit to increase your faith to accept His law as it is revealed to you in His Word.

“You will say to me then, ‘Why does He still find fault? For who has resisted His will?’ But indeed, O man, who are you to reply against God? Will the thing formed say to him who formed it, ‘Why have you made me like this?’ Does not the potter have power over the clay, from the same lump to make one vessel for honor and another for dishonor?” Rom 9:19-21.

“Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?" Gen 18:25.

“Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!" Mark 9:24.

"What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing"
