Reading: Jer: 2:1-8

“I remember you” (2)

The remembrance that God had for Israel at the time Jeremiah penned these words was bittersweet. He remembered when He first formed them as a nation; their kindness, love and faithfulness, but now He asked them, “What injustice have your fathers found in Me that they have gone far from Me?” He was in the process of announcing judgment on a disobedient and rebellious nation, a nation He loved and to whom He had promised untold blessings if only they would love Him and obey His law.

These words also remind us that Jesus Christ remembers His church. He looks at her as a bridegroom looks at His bride. He loves her with a perfect love and cherishes her as the apple of His eye; “He kept him as the apple of His eye. As an eagle stirs up its nest, hovers over its young, spreading out its wings, taking them up, carrying them on its wings, so the LORD alone led him” Deut 10-11. Can anything less be said of the Savior and the church for which He died? Eph 5:25. “Until the day breaks and the shadows flee, I will go to the mountain of myrrh and to the hill of incense. All beautiful you are, my darling; there is no flaw in you” Song of Solomon 4:6-7. Jesus dotes on His church. It is that of which He said, “I will build my church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it” Matt: 16:18. No human edifice with all of its magnificent spires and priceless art holds a candle to the structure Jesus is personally building. He pays attention to every detail and as the Master Carpenter insures that every feature is perfect.

But this remembrance must be two ways for we are called upon to remember Him. “And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me” Luke 22:19. How sad that some congregations celebrate the Lord’s Supper so infrequently. Only once did Jesus ask to be remembered and that is in accordance with His death, the apex of His love for us.

Those who truly love Him never forget Him and He is continually on their mind. “When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches. Because You have been my help, therefore in the shadow of Your wings I will rejoice” Ps 63:6-7. When we remember Him and let our minds dwell on who He is and what He has done for us we will be led into the realm of praise and rejoicing, “When I remember these things, I pour out my soul within me” Ps 42:4.

“Sing praise to the LORD, You saints of His, and give thanks at the remembrance of His holy name. For His anger is but for a moment, His favor is for life; weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning” Ps 30:4-5. What better pastime can we have than to remember His holy name? We can rejoice over that which He has done for us but true praise is generated when we remember His name; who He is; His magnificence, glory and holiness. There is no star or planet shines as great as He. He is the Light in a dark world; He is the very essence of brilliance and heaven is illuminated by it, “The city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it. The Lamb is its light” Rev 21:23.

The blood of Christ is like the blue thread in the tassel on the garments worn by the Jews (Num: 15: 39-40) so “that you may look upon it and remember”. Remember Him with thanks and praise in love, for He remembers you.

"What man of you, having a hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after the one which is lost until he finds it? And when he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing"
