MEDITATIONS FROM THE PSALMS

Reading: Psalm 94

“If I say, ‘My foot slips,’ Your mercy, O LORD, will hold me up” Ps 94:18

My soul, is this not among the most precious and valuable teachings in the Word of God? You are very aware of the many times you have slipped while walking the path of life. Some occasions have been a mere thought, a glance, or an unrighteous reaction, while others seem to have a stronghold on you that lasts days if not a lifetime.

How discouraged you become when that which you thought had been overcome raises its ugly head. When conquered sin reveals it is not dead but alive, it often shows itself, not with a whimper, but with invigorated energy. On every occasion, my soul, it is like a blood transfusion to you to remember that your Heavenly Father’s mercy has not wavered. He remains faithful to you because His mercies are renewed every morning. You may slip, and that too often, but underneath are the everlasting arms. Between you and the pit from which He has lifted you are the arms of your Creator.

“The LORD has been my defense, and my God the rock of my refuge” Ps 94:22.

“Unless the LORD had been my help, my soul would soon have settled in silence” Ps 94:17.

“It is Your mercy, dear Lord, that protects me from receiving that which I deserve. I question myself as to why it is so easy for me to sin against You after everything You have done for me. If it were not for Your mercy and everlasting faithfulness I would be languishing in the pit of hell. Your patience with me is amazing. Thank You, my Protector and Preserver, for keeping me enfolded in Your arms. Help me to overcome my weaknesses, and may my love for You grow deeper every day.”

O God, whose arm reached down to save me—

Accept my humble thanks;

You, whose strength alone could lift me up—

Accept my heartfelt thanks.

Dear Jesus, whose arms stretched across the beam—

I cannot thank You enough;

Whose love reached down to those who pierced You

I thank You with all my heart.

Dear Lord, whose outstretched arms are always there

Thank You for Your faithfulness;

Whose arms will for ever enfold me

Thank You for Your patience.

O God, whose arms keep me from falling

I thank You for Your mercy;

You, whose mercy preserves my soul—

I thank You for Your love.
